We never discussed my stepfather’s time in the Vietnam War. It was well before he joined our family. Among his military mementos, next to his dog tags, was a heavy gold men’s ring with an amethyst resting in the center. Design can transform and heal. The painful memories that the ring represented was transformed into a symbol of love and devotion. In celebration of my mother’s birthday, I created a simple and modern pendant out of the elements of the ring. The amethyst sits prominently in a bezel set brush gold casting with two bird’s eye mounted diamonds on both sides. The chain loops cleanly through the top of the setting without using a bail.
