The foundation for any signage project begins with its wayfinding strategy. This is where the design process begins. The principles of programming are similar whether you are designing signs for a resort or hospital. It starts with a thorough analysis of the space and identifying the user groups such as staff and visitors. This is achieved by a walk-through of the space or floor plans followed by Q&A sessions with the operators, interior designers, and architects. For seamless integration of the signs in their environment, I take my visual cues from the design architects and interior designers who have established the look and feel of the space. While collecting information, I also pinpoint the key sign types needed for daily operations, including brand activation, wayfinding, code, and opportunities for graphics used as landmarks. The following project illustrates the programming process that includes the sign location plans and the message schedule. Innercare and PACE are a healthcare facility that provides medical services to rural area communities in Imperial Valley, California. Innercare provides the primary adult care services, and PACE provides resources for the elderly.
