Commissioning AD/S to design and fabricate an engaging, interactive and iconic sign was part of a joint effort to revitalize an underused area of downtown San Francisco. The project unites designers, planners, and local agencies to transform the site into an accessible public space that reflects the city's heritage and energy while encouraging community interaction. The California & Drumm cable car terminus lacks visual coherence and is underutilized by the many visitors who board there. DSFP engaged SITELAB urban studio to create a concept plan with new features designed to enhance the user experience. Supported by a grant from the Mayor’s Office of Economic & Workforce Development and guided by the collaborative vision of city agencies and creative professionals, the initiative seeks to reimagine the entrance to downtown as a vibrant, welcoming threshold for residents and visitors alike. The project’s vision is grounded in the belief that downtown San Francisco deserves a space that not only welcomes but also inspires. With a focus on inclusivity, the design integrates both functional and artistic components, ranging from communal gathering areas to visually striking installations.
